African Hips Don't Lie

“Readers subscribe to blogs when they provide an informational or entertainment value so great that it would be a loss to not subscribe to it.”

“The bottom line is that blogging is like sex. You can’t fake it. You can’t fake passion. You can’t fake wanting to engage with the public. If you do, it will ultimately be an unsatisfying experience for both the blogger and their readers.” (Kevin Anderson)

1. Why you started blogging:

I can’t remember a time I did not write, however, I started blogging publically when I became involved with met my 2nd husband in 1997. He was/is an IT geek and he showed me how it all works and I’ve been publically sharing my life since. I decided to blog because I have a need to share, a need for feedback, I love to write and people seemed to like to read what I had to say… as soon the internet persona was born… besides, I was a stay at home mom by 1998…. so I needed the interaction also.

2. What you love about it/ hate about it:

I love the e-mails I have received over the years that something I wrote made  a difference in somebody else life, or when I receive positive feedback which I actually do often, that I should write proper and publish… sadly I only feel the need to writer about my life and the characters in it.. so fiction is out.

I hate when what I want to say does not come across as intended, or when I get mean-spirited comments, which I admit is rare….. they usually from anon fuckwits so they can’t be taken seriously as they were not even willing to make the comment as themselves.

3. How you came to choose the name for your blog:

My nickname given to me by my dead friend Tim back in 1994, Wenchy is obvious…. my friend Jax use to joke about me being nocturnal since at different times in my life my insomnia has been hectic… so there you go.

4. Who would you give your last rolo to?

I don’t share well, but I would give it to my husband because he has given me lots of ‘lasts‘ in the past three years that he could have kept for himself… like paying money into my account today because I mentioned I wanted a haircut and to have my toes painted.

5. If I were a colour, which would I be…and why.

Purple – duh… I love it… and it has become a signature of who I am in a way.

6. What 3 moments defined your life and explain briefly.

  1. Sitting on the stoep outside the mortuary with my Oupa Mike when I was 11, with him explaining to me that although everyone else decided to go and see my dead father, him and I are not those kind of people. We will remember my father as he was. It took me years to understand how deeply Oupa Mike must have loved me to have known that who *I* am would have been haunted by the sight of a very badly injured father who died in a horrific accident and apparently looked nothing like himself as a dead man. It defined that we do what is best for us, we do not follow the path… we make our own path. We choose what and whom we see – in many avenues in life.
  2. Leaving my first marriage. Standing on the court room steps feeling the world was mine and I could do anything. Never again in my life had I felt so free, so without burden. It remains the best decision I ever made. It defined that I did not have to settle in life. I will not settle.
  3. Eloping was pretty fucking defining. Lead me not into temptation for I shall find it myself…. off course, there is much more implied depth here than my words suggest.

7. What song would best describe you?

Alanis Morisette’s – Everything

I can be a nightmare of the grandest kind
I can withhold like it’s going out of style
I have the bravest heart that you’ve ever seen
And you’ve never met anyone who’s as positive as I am sometimes

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I’m ashamed
There’s not anything to which you can’t relate
And you’re still here

I blame everyone else, not my own partaking
My passive-aggressiveness can be devastating
I’m the most gorgeous woman that you’ve ever known
And you’ve never met anyone who’s as everything as I am sometimes

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I’m ashamed
There’s not anything to which you can’t relate
And you’re still here

What I resist, persists, and speaks louder than I know
What I resist, you love, no matter how low or high I go

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I’m ashamed
There’s not anything to which you can’t relate
And you’re still here

And you’re still here
And you’re still here…

8. If you could choose another career or job and money is no object, what would you do?

I would write… and take photographs as a hobby… and be a career wife. Seriously.

9. If the fairy comes with her magic wand and give you one wish that you have to use for yourself (and no one else), what would it be?

To feel enough.

10.What are you doing this December and are you looking forward to it?

I am working for the most part, and no I am not hugely looking forward to it…. I find Christmas doesn’t always bring out the best in people and they have unrealistic expectations of who needs to be visited, having enough money for gifts (especially for six kids), school uniforms, school stationery and text books for January etc – it makes me anxious. It also includes the anniversary of my father (the 14th) and Oupa Mike’s (the 12th) deaths.

11. What 3 things are on your Christmas wish list?

  1. To live with my husband – wake up with him, go to sleep with him – which would mean the house issue had been sorted.
  2. I wouldn’t mind some small stud like amathyst earrings.
  3. To feel alive in abundance and not anxious anymore.
  4. Can I please add a tattoo????

12. What is your idea of a perfect day off?

Be I alone, it would be sitting in a coffee shop watching the people… checking out the book shop and buying what I like… having my nails done, a facial… maybe a massage… having my eye brows waxed so I look lovely… and eating whatever I feel like without guilt….

13. Favourite book – one that you can read over and over and not tire of?

Tuesdays with Morrie.

14. First blog you started reading?

When I started reading blogs, South African bloggers were hard to come by – I can’t remember the first blog, but the first South African blog, was Angel’s.

15. You get to make over one room in your house – which room would it be and why? Maybe add a pic of how you would like to change it!

I feel without as place to call home at the moment and it leaves me unable to answer the question. Sorry.

The above was adapted from a blog post from Laura.

  1. I love that you eloped too. I have plans for us to elope. When I saw that you did, first it made me shed happy tears and touched my heart. As I have told you, you deserve your happily ever after. When I saw that you two got married the same way we’ve always planned to it made me happy for you because I know how very much in love I am. I will pray and hope you get all 3 of your Christmas wishes.

  3. I so agree with you. December sometimes can be a “not so jolly” journey especially with things you worry about like school text books, stationary and a whole new year starting in January. Especially if you have children. Sometimes I think the Americans have it “lekker” with their school year starting and ending in the middle of the year.

  4. I’m glad that you blog. We have so many shared experiences and feelings that reading your blogs often are an emotional workout for me. Plus, you’re an interesting creature! I’ve tried to blog many times and I just don’t feel compelled to write. It’s truly a gift (that I don’t have). I’m really glad you do, though.

  5. Love the song! It is so you in so many ways.

    Love you and your blog.

I see it as a chapter by chapter account of your(and our) lives which can always be accessed and read and remembered….especially the times “anyone who’s as positive as I am sometimes”

I also love that we eloped.

It seems I love allot about you! Who knew? I even love the word ALLOT

  7. I quite like that what your Oupa Mike said. I’ve seen a few dead people, one or two that I knew – and I do not feel better off for having had that experience at all.
