Winner of the @JoburgRedBus @budmarsh_lodge #HopOnHeritage is…

Dear friends and other interesting creatures,

On Friday, I had the absolute pleasure of doing a @JoburgRedBus #HopOnHeritage tour with some awesome Twitter folks with much gratitude to City Sightseeing. It was a day of true enjoyment and much laughter. I am sure @WalterPike and @SpicedWeasel took especially awesome pictures as I had serious lens envy!

Listening to the comments around me I felt incredibly blessed to be sharing my view of being a tourist in my own city. Especially once we entered the city centre, so many recalled memories (including me, yes – I am THAT old!). There was much laughter and entertainment by our resident comic @RichSimmondsZA (nutter!) and I absolutely loved seeing @SamanthaPerry smile and who did an awesome #selfie with her @Wakaberry glasses on … as well as @MeeAParkins who preferred the covered side of the bus.

We left from Gold Reef City and got off at Stop 11 in Braamfontein to have coffee at Double Shot. We walked across the road for lunch at Eight Six for some lunch and cupcakes.

@WilhelmNiekerk and I posing with a cupcake… as one does.

It was truly such a fun and HAPPY time. It was wonderful to see everyone smile and enjoy themselves after the gloom reports of the weather. Well, since I always take the weather with me, it was sunny but crisp and fabulous!

@Budmarsh_Lodge joined in our most fabulous endeavour and offered a prize of one nights accommodation at Budmarsh which includes a six course, fine dining experience prepared by Executive Chef Chris Tustian, a delightful breakfast and a night away at my favourite weekend get-away in Magaliesburg valued at R3500 to the contestant who interacted with Budmarsh the most.

#Evita&Co @TannieEvita @EvitaSePerron by @shenayobrien cc @buzpr @EmperorsPalace

Dear friends and other interesting people,

I have invited the very talented, @shenayobrien to join the #JoziGem team. She has very kindly accepted my offer to write a guest blog about the show Evita & Co and meeting up with the first lady of fabulous, Evita Bezuidenhout.

I wish you enough,

shenay and evita

On Sunday 10 August 2014, I had the privilege of attending one of the most inspirational, thought-provoking shows I have ever seen, by none other than the First Lady of South Africa, Evita Bezuidenhout.

The atmosphere was electric as young and old waited to go in to the “Theatre of Marcellus” to experience the words of the woman who has changed the face of politics and social affairs forever.

The performance started with a video montage telling the story of Evita in her younger years. Interviews with her husband, children, various politicians and reporters sharing how Evita inspired them and others. In 2014 Evita Bezuidenhout turned 70. The video included birthday wishes from icons like Pik Botha, Arts Bishop Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela.  It is clear to see why she was, and still is, an integral part of our South African heritage.

Evita stepped on stage with  cheer and applaud from the audience. I am sure many others like myself couldn’t believe that she was standing in the flesh only a few meters away.

The show dealt with the controversy of Apartheid (that we still face today), safe sex, and Evita’s story how she endured and persevered in politics since the age of 22.  There were various character changes as Pieter Dirk-Uys portrayed some of the most loved and despised characters such as Evita’s maid Mrs. Peterson, the Sex-Guru, her sister Bambi Kellerlman (who in detail explained to us how to put on a condom with the help of her life-size “toys”) and former politicians FW de Klerk, John Vorster and Pik Botha.

Humour filled the auditorium, but a serious message was conveyed with all the laughter. We have to stand together as a nation. She referred to the younger generation “We have to look at children. Children don’t have a colour. Children are sweet and innocent, they are not racist”. We always have a CHOICE, be it Positive or Negative, but the Choice is ours, and we have to initiate that for the current generations and those to come.

As the show drew to a close, another video montage came up, as to give Pieter Dirk-Uys time to get back in to his beloved character. In this video it showed a much older Evita, with her most iconic photos and the inaugural of her own street the “Evita Bezuidenhout BLVD” in the town Darling where she is currently residing and running her Restaurant “Evita se Peron”. As she stepped back on stage, she thanked the audience and with a quirkiness said “I’m going up to the foyer, see you there and let’s take a selfie together”.

I had the honour of meeting this remarkable woman and upon taking our photo together she uttered the words “Jy lyk pragtig my skat”. I felt Loved, Accepted, Liberated and Free all at once. Truly one of the most treasured moments I will remember for a long time.

WALK OF SHAME stars Elizabeth Banks as an aspiring reporter whose dreams of becoming a network news anchor are compromised after a one-night stand with a handsome stranger (James Marsden) leaves her stranded in downtown Los Angeles without a phone, car, ID or money – and only 8 hours to make it to the most important job interview of her life.

@67Blankets for Madiba. A @Carolyn_Steyn initiative. cc @tbdza

Dear friends and other interesting creatures,

Since I updated my Facebook status about my involvement with @67Blankets, I have received quite a number of enquiries on how to get involved. Yay guys!

I first Googled ‘How to crochet a square’ because @TimothyMoloi told me that is how he learned . It only confirmed I can’t crochet even with a slow motion, step by step, ‘You Tube’ instructional video.

I then Google ‘How to knit a square’.  Knitting thankfully came back to me from the days of my youth once I was reminded how. Yes,  I am knitting a blanket. Yes,  a purple blanket. 🙂

PS.  I need someone to crochet me a few small white flowers to put on my blanket please.  🙂  Any volunteers?

Madiba gave 67 years of his life fighting for freedom in his lifetime. On the date of his birth,  18 July we celebrate ‘Madiba Day’ by giving 67 minutes of our time to assist others in many diverse ways. The idea is that you are giving your time to make a blanket to keep someone less fortunate warm.

When I am given a gift,  I say ‘Thank You’. The most undomesticated person on the planet, who struggles sewing a button, is knitting squares for a blanket to say: ‘Thank You Tata’.

@SirNoid reminded me that my hands are not my best functioning body parts (Fibromyalgia is not sexy) but took me shopping for needles and wool anyway –  Thank You!!

As @Carolyn_Steyn says,  stitch by stitch we will keep people warm! I like the sound of that.

Follow @67Blankets on Twitter, look it up on Facebook but most of all, start knitting #KnitWits!

I wish you enough,

VERY IMPORTANT: If you do not see yourself able to participate in physically knitting a blanket, please support the annual Twitter Blanket Drive @tbdza with collection points all over the country where you can drop off newly purchased or used blankets. An incredible project that started with a single tweet from @MelanieMinnaar. Love that woman.

@RIAD_Band @KevvieCartman #YNWA #LFC

Dear friends and other interesting creatures,

In truth,  sometimes I don’t know where my children end,  and I begin.  We all venture, but we never walk alone.

My biological and born from my heart children are fiercely independent. (My step children were raised differently so I don’t know how they will still react to live.) Not one of us has had easy roads but we have enjoyed spectacular scenery. We have all experienced deep,  raw painful truths but we have all laughed allowed  in the end.

My first born son Kev (named after the Fred Savage character in ‘The Wonder Years’ ) has grown up with me.  I was 20 years old when he was my baby born and it was the first time in my life I felt a true sense of belonging,  other than my grandparents home.  He has been my son, my child,  my friend,  my companion,   my confidant,  my protector,  my rock,  my joy,  my pride, a pain in my ass and my inspiration.

Kevin very quickly found his own way in the world once he left school.  Today he works in the IT industry, plays football, lives #LFC (and the tattoo to prove it!!) and follows his dream of making music – realised in a band started with friends,  Reality Is A Dream.  (Twitter: RIAD_Band They are also on Facebook,  please go ‘like’ their page.)

In truth, while it is just high school cool to be in a band,  what really inspires me is that unlike me lounging dreaming about walking long distances,  there are people like Kev who run after their dreams,  rehearse weekly and keep the flame burning.  THAT is what causes my soul to dance.  People do walk those long distances.

I love that I did not raise cookie cutter kids.  They are so different,  and with unending gratitude I have the stretch marks.  I am ‘the Mom’ of interesting creatures!

Reality Is A Dream will be playing this weekend at Jeppe Quandom,  79 Boeing Road East,  Bedfordview on Freedom Day,  Sunday at 12h00 and again at 15h45. Support local music!

‘What would you do if if I sang out a tune,  would you stand up and walk out on me?’ – lyrics from the theme song from ‘The Wonder Years’

I wish you…. Enough.

Dear friends and other interesting creatures

My experience with @21Icons have been exceptional and worthy to be mentioned on my blog.

City of Tshwane & 21 ICONS
– A 20 Years of Democracy

Celebration scheduled from 9 to 12 April 2014

The Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, announced the City’s commemorative programme for 20 Years of Freedom at Freedom Park today. The programme commences with the City of Tshwane & 21 ICONS – A 20 Years of Democracy Celebration scheduled from 9 to 12 April 2014.

“This special four-day event pays tribute to many inspiring men and women who contributed to building a free and democratic South Africa Their life stories tells a story of how South Africa’s democracy came about. We will remain forever grateful for their selfless contribution, said Ramokgopa.

The hosting of the 21 Icons exhibition in Tshwane is a clear indication of our stance on becoming a Capital City. Most of the featured icons featured have footprints in the city and it is only fitting for us to pay tribute to these founders of democracy, added Ramokgopa.

21 ICONS is an annual project featuring South Africans who made an extraordinary contribution to the country. Acclaimed international photographer, filmmaker and founder of 21 ICONS, Adrian Steirn, captures each icon in a unique portrait and their intimate conversations on film. The icons will be brought to life in Tshwane during the celebration through these portraits and films as well as essays and dramatisations. The line-up of events includes: an interactive 21 ICONS exhibition and a family day, screenings of the documentary A Journey to Democracy; photography and film workshops; and a Charity Auction.

The featured icons are Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk, Desmond Tutu, Sophia Williams De Bruyn, Kumi Naidoo, Lillian Cingo, Nadine Gordimer, Ahmed Kathrada, George Bizos, Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg, Helen Sebidi, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Gary Player, William Kentridge, Phillip Tobias, Evelina Tshabalala, John Kani, Zackie Achmat, Karel Benadie and Gcina Mhlope.

“It is such an honour for us that 21 ICONS was chosen to kick off the capital city’s 20 Years of Freedom celebrations,” says Adrian Steirn. “Madiba’s legacy means so much to the country, but there are many who helped bring about South Africa’s freedom and their inspirational stories need to be told.

Swati Dlamini, granddaughter of the late Nelson Mandela and spokesperson for 21 ICONS helped bring the event to fruition: “The celebration hosted by the City of Tshwane pays homage to my late grandfather and to all those who paved the way for our democracy. I am proud to be part of it.”

Tshwane residents are invited to secure their tickets free of charge from 1 April 2014 at the City Hall box office from 7 April 2014. Tickets are available on a first come first serve basis. The City has earmarked several schools whose learners will be hosted at City Hall. The City has also invited aspirant Tshwane photographers to participate in the photographic and film workshops hosted by Adrian Steirn.

The City further aims to promote good citizenship, participatory democracy and cultural diversity. 21 ICONS South Africa is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz South Africa, Nikon and Deloitte and supported by the Department of Arts and Culture.

The City of Tshwane & 21 Icons – A 20 Years of Democracy Celebration:

The Exhibition

The exhibition will be located in the foyer and grand corridors of City Hall and will include the full 21 ICONS portrait collection, behind-the-scenes photographs, short films of each of the icons and accompanying essays. Visitors will have an opportunity to interact with the icons through visual, audio and audio-visual exhibitions. City Hall will be open to the public between 10 and 12 April 2014, from 9am to 7pm daily.

The City of Tshwane & 21 Icons – A 20 Years of Democracy Celebration:

Documentary Screenings

The 45 minute documentary, 21 ICONS – A Journey to Democracy will be screened throughout the four-day event. The public are invited to attend the screenings free of charge between 10 and 12 April 2014 from 10am to6pm.

This special hour-long edition featuring the icons, creates a compelling and powerful picture of South Africa past and present — and where it needs to go, according to those who played major roles in forging its precious democracy. The documentary delves into the apartheid past and shares the stories of heartache that were created through living in exile, from Hugh Masekela’s fear of losing his language to John Kani’s pain and remorse at being physically so removed from the struggle back home. Though dotted with anger at times, the icons’ memories also throw up many moments of great humour and light-heartedness, and many share a palpable sense of wonder at how South Africa avoided a racial war and said yes to reconciliation and hope, and no to hatred and revenge.

The City of Tshwane & 21 Icons – A 20 Years of Democracy Celebration:

The Family Day

A family day will be held on Saturday 12 April 2014 from 9am-3pm. Kids will have an opportunity to learn about the founders of South Africa’s democracy through the exhibition and spend time in a special kids play area where art activities will be hosted.

The City of Tshwane & 21 Icons – A 20 Years of Democracy Celebration:

Photographic and Film Workshops

The photographic and film workshops were initiated to give Tshwane talent practical experience with acclaimed international photographer Adrian Steirn and his team. Two full-day workshops are scheduled for 10 and 11 April 2014. The programme topics include portrait photography, understanding light, planning a shoot, career guidance and social media for photographers and filmmakers.

The City of Tshwane & 21 Icons – A 20 Years of Democracy Celebration:

The Charity Auction

The much anticipated 21 ICONS South Africa Charity Auction will be hosted by the City of Tshwane and aims to raise R10 million for charities nominated by each of the icons. The original signed portraits and several donated celebrity items will be auctioned by the formidable auctioneer Gift Ngwenya. The guest list is limited to 600. Among the charities that will receive donations are The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, The Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation, Green Peace, Food and Trees for Africa, Star Fish Foundation, The Princess of Africa Trust, Saheti School and the Gary Player Foundation.

Dear friends and other interesting creatures,

Last night I had the privilege to attend @SeanBovim ‘s #QueenAtTheBallet at @joburgtheatre.

I have been pondering my review all day. How do I capture the profound performance of a ballet company so unique, merged – but never over powered by the music of Queen and exploring the raw fire inside The Great Pretender,  Freddie Mercury?

Perhaps some may experience this masterpiece as a flawless performance by a talented ballet company, to the music of a legend that ended too soon.  I would suggest we did not experience the same performance.

For me,  it was far more gripping and personal.  The talented Henk Opperman’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury was beautifully intense. Breathtaking in depth,  soul destroying in thought. I could feel the struggle,  the torment as to Freddie Mercury’s exploring sexuality with passion and yet with ease.

I could tell you the company was formed in 2009, that @SeanBovim is a genius,  that the show has had two sold out runs in Cape Town and will no doubt experience the same success here at @joburgtheatre. The company makes you both drool and sign a gym membership immediately ….

It is not seeing a show.  It is witnessing the gift of the arts,  in all its greatness and splendour.

Do you want to live forever?

I wish you enough,

Nelia Annandale, Founder of Keedo, two years after the birth of her twins, lay in a hospital bed after a near fatal skiing accident, she realised that she had something to offer mother earth and her children and that the time for action had come. She now appreciated that her time on this earth was not guaranteed and that she should make use of her talents to reach her goals and live out her dreams while she was still able.

Nelia battled to find comfortable, fun, colourful clothing that was soft on the skin of her twins, so she decided to create a range of clothing that suited her needs and was kind to the environment. She took a leap of faith and approached a bank for a small loan. With this, she started the first Keedo branch in Cape Town, named after her own two ‘keedos’.

Nelia has a passion to help other women and has built a successful business while maintaining a keen focus on providing sustainable employment.
