My son, @liamjamescadger and I recently attended a rooftop party (nothing like a Wench on the town with her son who is legal!) at The Copper Bar, where we got down to doing The Salty Dog... we didn’t learn about THE Tom Collins until much later, so we had to skip.. even if he did arrive with a cherry on top!
Wikipedia has this to say about “this liquid legend“:
Gordon’s is a brand of London dry gin first produced in 1769. The top markets for Gordon’s are (in descending order) the United Kingdom, the United States and Greece. It is owned by the British spirits company Diageo and is made in Scotland (although flavourings may be added elsewhere). It is the world’s best selling London Dry gin. Gordon’s has been the UK’s number one gin since the late 19th century.
The recipe for Gordon’s is known to only twelve people in the world and has been kept a secret for 250 years. Triple-distilled, the gin contains juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root, liquorice, orris root, orange and lemon peel. It takes ten days distillation after receiving the wheat to create a finished product of a bottle of Gordon’s Gin. Gordon’s recipe differentiated from others at the time in that it didn’t add sugar, which other distillers had used to disguise impurities. This made it a “dry” gin.
In terms of clear spirits I’m usually on the vodka side of the bar, but I was pleasantly surprised with Gordon’s. It was subtle, not overpowering and mixed well with my standard favourite, orange juice. Yes, I will sip and try all things but may not necessarily finish the entire glass. I was thankful I had Liam James waiting in the wings to try all combinations with ample feedback! We really had a smashing afternoon.
The venue was ever so upmarket, beautifully decorated, stylish and refreshing, with platters of food that just kept appearing. All that was missing was a Palm leaf. I really do believe life might just be a tad more legendary with #GordonsLegends @GordonsGinSA . Especially when shared with people you love and wonderful memories are made!
Thank you for the invitation, it is an afternoon neither I, nor my son will soon forget. Sophisticated we sipped our gin, watching the sunset over the City Of Gold. Snacking on salmon… as one does.
A salty dog is a cocktail of Gordon’s gin, or vodka and grapefruit juice, served in a highball glass with a salted rim. The salt is the only difference between a salty dog and a greyhound. Vodka may be used as a substitute for gin; nevertheless, it is historically a gin drink.
As for the THE Tom Collins … google him. He has a history. #wink
Happy Thanksgiving to all, but especially to my friends and family living in the United States which is where this tradition was born.
Vicky and I met at school and have been friends since I was 12. Vix came to live with us a year or so later, and it was tremendous having my best friend become my sister! It has been a gift of friendship, love, support, loyalty, forgiveness, compromise, humour, affection, devotion that keeps on giving, for over 30 years. I love Vicky an intense amount.
Vicky and her husband, Russ and my gorgeous niece, Alex and nephew, Drew became proper America citizens last year. They residential on Marco Island in Florida and love the sea and sailing lifestyle.
This was the first election they could vote (ha ha ha!!), today is their first Thanksgiving as America citizens … and their first, smack people out the way #HelloBlackFriday as proper Americans tomorrow.😆
I asked Vicky who has been living in the land of the free, and going out on #HelloBlackFriday, which appears like where the brave comes in, to tell me more about what #HelloBlackFriday is really like.
Ok Black Friday! You can go line up at most shops from late on Thursday night – Thanksgiving until the shops open on Friday and the shops open at 1:00am in the morning but you would be able to get all sorts of stuff at really special prices!
People has been trampled trying to get into Walmart and now they issue tickets and have a limited amount of the items for sale in the stores…. like you can buy a 60″ TV for a tiny amount but there is only 5 in the store.
Also what is happening, is more and more shops have started offering sales online as well as have there specials start early e.g. from today (Thursday).
But then if you think you have special deals on Friday…. they also have Cyber Monday! 😀 Bigger and better!
Anyway living here, I have been keeping off buying anything because everything goes on sale on Friday. I have 25 items in my basket for Amazon that I will only buy on Friday, and it’s the best time to buy Christmas gifts!
Dear friends, family and other interesting creatures,
It’s cold. The shadow creeps deeper into the black hole of a non existent shelter. The wind has no boundary and freely flows into every available space. There is a plastic sheet picked up from a delivery bay held tightly in an effort to provide warmth.
This could be me.
This could be you.
If we be truly honest, there are many of us who live from payday to payday. Take away the lifeline of your monthly income and perhaps no family or friends willing or able to help, where do you go? There is nothing that leaves you above ending up on the street … with nothing. Nothing.
People living on the street are no different from you or I. They feel hunger, love, dislike, just like us. Woman have periods. Their digestive system did not conveniently shut down because life hit them hard. There are very real issues. All people have hopes and dreams. We all want to be loved, respected and feel we are special.
Every person born, will die. Did you aid your fellow man in his journey between the beginning and end?
I was introduced to the Twitter Blanket Drive in 2013. It was the second media event I ever attended. This year I was approached to take on the role of National Brand Ambassador.
#TBD2016 needs a boost in Johannesburg as it is well established in Cape Town.
We would be grateful if you would hop over and “like” the page and stay informed. Jozi TBD Our Twitter account is @JoziTBD. We are using the hashtag #TBD2016 nationally.
Life is an odd creature. There is no other way to ride but bareback. You are guaranteed to feel every vibration of the animal moving under you. One thing I guarantee, there will be music.
Sometimes a vibrant Street festival with laughter and little umbrellas in our cocktails. Babies smiling as the only humans they know tickles their feet. People laying in the sun. Some reading, some contemplating but … the blue skies feel promising. A guitar on a teenage boys lap… somewhere in the background.
Other days life is the final breathe, the dirty, rough sand between our fingers as we toss it, dust to dust, on a loved ones coffin. Indeed in that moment dismantle the sun, let the mourners come… and I hear a lonely saxophone.
It has never happened to me that I see a movie, the audience randomly burst into applause, remain seated while the credits roll in silence and the audience keep applauding … and nobody rushes to their feet. Especially not an Afrikaans movie.
I had read “Dis ek, Anna” and “Die staat teen Anna Bruwer” in my native language Afrikaans and was deeply touched by it. When I received an invitation to the film viewing, I had to see it.
My son Liam James (19) accompanied me. He was worried he wouldn’t follow an Afrikaans film as it is not his first language. There were subtitles in English, but to be honest, it is not imperative to the comprehension of the film.
The time has passed where local film cannot compete in the box office. If I wasn’t convinced after “Balade Vir ‘n Enkeling”, I have zero doubt now!
Charlenè Brouwer who plays the role of the older Anna, is flawless. Morne Visser definitely also deserves a massive mention.
This is a film that gets full colours, 5 big purple stars from me!
From Wikipedia :
“Dis ek, Anna” is a South African (Afrikaans) drama based on the two top selling novels by Anchien Troskie (writing as Elbie Lotter) called Dis ek, Anna (It’s me, Anna) and Die Staat teen Anna Bruwer (The State vs Anna Bruwer). Set in modern day South Africa, it tells the story of Anna Bruwer who avenge the years of abuse suffered by the hand of her step father and the court case that ensues. Written by Tertius Kapp. Produced by Niel van Deventer. Directed by Sara Blecher and starring amongst others Charlene Brouwer, Marius Weyers, Nicola Hanekom, Morne Visser, Drikus Volschenk, Elize Cawood and Eduan van Jaarsveld.
For the next week it is showing exclusively at @nouveaubuzz in @RosebankMall, before it will be released nation wide. Go see it.
When my children were little, I use to go to the movies every Tuesday morning. There has always been something magical about escaping to the cinema. The smell of popcorn and icy green slush aside, I just loved becoming invisible and lose myself into the great, big screen in front of me. It has always been a place of magic…. besides that is was an adult space for me on a Tuesday morning. No crying children demanding attention, or food, or beating each other with swords!
Add a decade or so to that exhausted young Mom and you will see an older Wenchy, visiting Cine Prestige on Mother’s Day with her daughter at her side. Cine Prestige is the grown up version of my escape with the luxury of cake, cappuccino and chocolate… with the popcorn and green slush if you like, but with all the thrill that the big screen brings. I was invited to attend a Mother’s Day event to see The Age Of Adaline and it was the perfect end to celebrate being a Mom Day.
Directed by Lee Toland Krieger, The age of Adaline is a touching and beautiful romantic, drama and a most believable fable. Blake Lively is a most convincing young woman and you do believe in her sophistication of having experienced many more years. I found her love affair with Michiel Huisman slightly sad, as in my heart, I wanted Adaline to end up with another love, the talented Harrison Ford … a love that belonged to another lifetime. Perhaps that made the story that much more intimate for those who believe love is timeless.
My teenage daughter, Victoria and I left suitable warm and fuzzy as one should, especially on Mother’s Day. I highly recommend The age of Adaline for everyone who wishes to escape and dream for a little while. It’s soul food.
I have received many goodie bags as a blogger and as a Social Media Diva (Do like my page please – #shameless gasp!) but I must give huge credit to whomever suggested “Goodi Box” for this event at Ster-Kinekor at The Zone in Rosebank. I am hugely impressed with the gorgeous goodies we received. Suitable, high quality and I felt absolutely spoiled. Thank you so very much. I do hope to receive many more of these “Goodi boxes”!!
Thank you sincerely for the invitation Ster-Kinekor. Cine Prestige was perfect. You made my day!!
Think New York City – noise, alive with people, sounds and sights.
Bike messenger Cam (Taylor Lautner from the “The Twilight Saga”) crashes his bike into the gorgeous Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos from the sci-fi series “The 100”) and is at once infatuated by her being well, gorgeous and has moves that you remind you of CatWoman, but on a smaller scale. Cam crashing into Nikki does not make him the world best bike rider however. #justsaying
Turns out Cam is in debt to the mafia, although I never quite figured out why …. and his attraction to Nikki’s opens Cam to the thrill of the world of a gang who pull off heists using parkour. Hoping to pay off his debt, Cam gets very involved with the gang who keeps digging deeper and jumping higher.
The movie has a PG13 rating and I would say the target audience is between 16 and 21. I found it light entertainment, an escape from reality … but the stunts were not all that impressive. The girl in me loved the ending and I did enjoy seeing Taylor Lautner is something other than Twighlight.
Wikipedia tells us that Parkour is a holistic training discipline using movement that developed from military obstacle course training. Practitioners aim to get from A to B in the most efficient way possible. This is done using only the human body and the surroundings for propulsion, with a focus on maintaining as much momentum as possible while still remaining safe.
I wish you enough and remember, you can never read enough books or see too many movies!
We met our tour guide from @capephototour and other photography enthusiasts at the Cape Milner Hotel which struck me as boutique and quite beautiful. Jaco was the perfect guide. Young, informed, full of life and witty. He guided everyone to stay on schedule with regards to time without anyone feeling rushed. We all enjoyed his company tremendously.
The Chase The Sun Peninsula Tour is a full day package from about 10h00 until approximately 19h00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Taking into account that the sun goes down quite late in the Cape it was perfect.
While I revived my love for photography with my trusty Canon, @SirNoid made use of the Samsung NX300 camera on offer. The awesome part is that while you get to play with a new camera, you take your pictures home on a memory stick at the end of the day. I thought that was kinda cool.
What I enjoyed most about the tour was the information shared by our guide, Jaco. His hint and tips at every stop as to camera settings along with events or interesting stories from the area made the experience personable. It was wonderful that neither my husband or I were driving, so we could both focus totally on our surroundings and the beauty of the Cape. A simplistic lunch of fish and chips was very appropriate and absolutely delicious in taste and I loved listening to the locals chatting around us. Very funny characters!
Be prepared for a change of weather so bring along a light jacket or dress in layers. Best to wait to the bigger tourist attractions to use the bathrooms and the public facilities are not very pleasant. We received bottled water when the trip started and @SirNoid and I bought ice cream at Boulders Beach, sold by a local from their garage. It added to the tourist in your own country feeling. Also, note that it is a bit of a walk up to the lighthouse at Cape Point. I had never been before and may have chosen better shoes had I known. You can make use of the funicular for a 3 minute ride to the top should you wish. 286 metres above sea level took me lots longer to walk! Still I am glad @SirNoid encouraged me to. It was beautiful up there. The ocean carries on forever. Entrance to all destinations are included in your tour price, along with lunch.
Our stops included:
I’ve been wanting a mascot, much like @SpicedWeasel has (yes, a shamelessly stole their idea – thank you guys!), and @SirNoid and I found a purple and yellow giraffe at the airport on our way to Cape Town. Jaco named him #Twiga… so here you go, introducing #Twiga – doing the photo tour, posing on Muizenberg Beach.
Kalk Bay (where we had a delicious fish and chips lunch) & Fish Hoek
Simons Town / Boulder’s Beach with the fabulous jackass penguins
The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve & Cape Point
Chapman’s Peak Drive
The tour is relevant for both local photography lovers, as well as tourists. While locals may see these scenic views often, it does not come with the group dynamic, interesting stories and tips of somebody in the know. For tourists it would be fantastic to see the attractions and take awesome pictures along the way.
